We are delighted to offer some very special collectable books for sale on behalf of a Book Warren client.

Firstly we are excited to showcase Winston S Churchill’s ‘The Second World War’. A comprehensive account of the period 1919 – 1945 written by one of its foremost participants. Churchill’s position in the British Government gave him access to a wealth of sources that were not available to most historians. The book was a major commercial success on both sides of the Atlantic and remains of value today as a memoir of Churchill’s experience of the war. 

This is the Chartwell edition and was published in 1954 by The Educational Book Company Limited and corrects the errors present in the original edition. Hardcover 1st Edition, bound in red cloth with Churchill’s profile inset on each volume; all six volumes are in very good condition and also covered in protective film.

Often regarded as one of the finest non-fiction works of the twentieth century and contributed significantly to Churchill’s Nobel Prize for Literature, this rarely found “Chartwell Edition” set comprises:- The Gathering Storm, Their Finest Hour, The Grand Alliance, The Hinge of Fate, Closing the Ring and Triumph and Tragedy. Illustrated with maps, charts and diagrams throughout. Tight binding, no damage, no inscriptions, stains or foxing evident and the original red colouring to the top page edges remains intact. Sure to be of interest any serious collector, a set such as this shall no doubt increase in value as editions of this quality likely to appreciate in value.

Our next collectable set is MARLBOROUGH. His Life and Times. This is a two volume set by Winston S Churchill and published by George G Harrap and Co. Ltd in 1958.

Book One consists of volumes 1 and 2 of the original work. Book Two consists of volumes 3 & 4 of the original work published in 1933 Dustcovers are in excellent condition with protective plastic book covers over; price clipped to both volumes. Book bindings are excellent. All pages, maps and plans in very good clean condition with occasional small tears.

The History of the British Empire in India and The East by Dr E H Nolan c.1860.

First Edition complete in two volumes; This was an extremely popular work in England during the nineteenth century and provided detailed, largely unknown insights into unfamiliar cultures and countries such as India and other Eastern nations. Extensive details of important British wars and skirmishes in India, including the Sepoy Mutiny and Afghan wars. There are general observations on customs, clothing and life in the East and both volumes are complimented by a large number of steel engravings and coloured maps. Each volume has a portrait frontispiece and illustrated vignette to the title page, and thirty illustrated plates to volume one (eight of which are two page coloured maps) and thirty nine plates to volume II. Condition: Leather half bound with marbled boards;. Gilt stamped detail to spines. Hardcover Condition: Poor Externally heavily rubbed and bumped to extremities. Extensive rubbing to head and tail of spine resulting in some loss to head of spines to both volumes. Hinges partially split. Bright marbled endpapers to both volumes. Generally firmly bound internally although some loose pages. Pages generally readable and clean throughout with some foxing to frontispiece of Volume two and previous owners stamps to front pages of both volumes. Light scattered spotting to first and last few pages and the odd plate. Pages 442 & 443 in volume one watermarked and stuck together; Marbling to page edges, dust toned and faded. In volume one a previous owner has drawn a feint pencil route across a map of India – a possible tour perhaps?. Overall Condition: Fair. A great purchase for a restorer – in very good condition these would be worth at least double our selling price.
